Thank you Deanna Biase for the excellent article you wrote about ZooBurst and Bear Tavern Elementary School. It’s great to have the opportunity to help out with The Cultural Diversity Project and seeing what the students have created using ZooBurst. It’s a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic and dynamic group of teachers, staff, administrators, students and parents. I’m really looking forward to interacting with the ceramic tile mosaic / iPad wall mural during Bear Tavern Elementary School’s 50^th anniversary celebration. It’s going to be incredible.

ZooBurst iPad App Released

We’re excited to announce that the first version of the ZooBurst app is now available on the iPad! It allows storytellers to view and intuitively interact with their augmented reality 3D popup books.

I just presented the Social Syllabus project at NEALLT 2012, Teacher Roles and Practices in Technology-Enhanced Instruction at Carnegie Mellon University. Thanks to all who attended my session! I received some valuable feedback and was happy to hear that the audio recorder could be helpful to instructors teaching a foreign language.

Craig Kapp and I recently hosted a three-day workshop for East Hanover school district to demonstrate how iPads and Augmented Reality could be used in the classroom. We showcased a number of easy-to-use applications, including ZooBurst, QRCodes, etc. However, there was one application that we showcased that has enormous potential for instructional purposes. Aurasma is a free app that lets you discover, create and share amazing virtual content, integrated into the real world. Using this application we were able to demonstrate the steps involved to simplify algebra equations, create virtual field trips and develop interactive science exhibitions.

ReedBox at the New Jersey Festival of Electronic Arts

The ReedBox that I created during my time at ITP was displayed this week at the New Jersey Festival of Electronic Arts. The festival took place at The Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. It was a great event with lots of interesting things happening: e-drum circles, experimental music, interactive sculpture, performances, workshops and lots of blinking lights. This is definitely an event that I will attend again next year!

Thank you to the folks who attended my Social Syllabus presentation at NJEdge today. It was a great motivation for me to relaunch the social search tool into the application. It was also interesting to hear your thoughts on how comfortable (or uncomfortable) instructors feel about publishing their course materials online. Given the rise of social media and the emergence of a more participatory culture, I’m surprised that we aren’t seeing more open courses in higher education (aside from iTunes University, MIT, and OCW). There are still many instructors who would prefer to host course materials behind a protected learning management system. That’s interesting… need to think more about this.

ZooBurst at PULSE

Craig Kapp, the creator of ZooBurst, was invited to showcase his augmented reality 3D pop-up book builder at the Telfair Museum in Savanna, Georgia. The nine-day event, “PULSE: Art and Technology Festival”, promotes the creative interpretation of art and technology and is geared towards students, artists, electricians, musicians, engineers, techies and families.

As a co-collaborator on the ZooBurst project, Craig and I were able to develop a custom ZooBurst application designed to work in a gallery setting. For PULSE, we created an augmented reality pop-up version of an early twentieth century children’s book, The Mythological Zoo, by Oliver Herford. This book can be experienced in two ways. A book seen on screen allows users to swipe their hands in the air to turn the pages. In addition, viewers can pick up a card with a special ZooBurst augmented reality marker to see the animated images in palm of their hand.

Social Syllabus Beta Release

I am happy to announce that the beta version of Social Syllabus has been released. Social Syllabus is a lightweight course delivery platform that supports the development of dynamic course websites, collaborative learning environments and professional networks. Features include: calendar, assignments, dropbox, blog, books, roster, materials, audionotes and professional profiles. I’ve been developing Social Syllabus and using it in my own classes for the last two years.

We are still adding new features and improving our existing framework. However, if you are an instructor, we’d love your feedback while using Social Syllabus in your own classes. Feel free to sign up for an account!
